Here at Mumie we want to share with you all the tips we and our community of parents have picked up on our journey through parenting that made our new lives as parents a little easier; our Mumie hacks. Today we will look at postnatal exercise classes, with a focus on one we have tried personally, Buggyfit.
So you’re feeling slightly more human after the birth of your baby, and keen to start moving again. Whether you were a seasoned athlete before your baby was born, or want to start getting into shape after your pregnancy, it can be hard to know where to start. Increasing numbers of gyms are offering mum and baby exercise classes, from spinning to yoga and everything in between. But sometimes you’ll just want to get outside, or your baby might be one of those who only likes to sleep in a buggy. This is where Buggyfit comes in.
Buggyfit is a fitness program designed specifically for new mothers who want to start exercising safely after having a baby. The program involves exercising outdoors while pushing your baby in a stroller or buggy. The classes are led by qualified instructors who specialise in postnatal fitness.
Buggyfit classes typically last around 60 minutes and include a mix of cardio and strength training exercises. The classes are designed to help new mothers rebuild their core strength, both tummy and pelvic floor, as well as improve their cardiovascular fitness and tone muscles. Exercises can include brisk walking, lunges, squats, and resistance band exercises, among others.
One of the benefits of Buggyfit is that it allows new mothers to exercise while spending time with their baby. The stroller or buggy provides a safe and secure environment for the baby while the mother exercises. Many mothers also appreciate the social aspect of Buggyfit, as it provides an opportunity to meet and connect with other new mothers.
Buggyfit is also a great way to get outside and enjoy some fresh air and exercise. Studies have shown that spending time outdoors can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing, and can help reduce stress and anxiety.
What do I need to try Buggyfit?
- A pram or buggy – any will do, no fancy running buggies needed!
- A supportive bra – not necessarily a sports bra, however we love the ones you can feed in!
- Well fitting trainers and comfortable clothing
- A drink for you
- Toys / snacks etc for baby

If you are interested in trying Buggyfit, it’s important to check with your healthcare provider first to make sure you are cleared for exercise. You can usually ask about this at your 6-8 week GP checkup. Join Mumie using the links above for a checklist of things to consider before returning to exercise. It’s important to choose an instructor who is qualified and experienced in postnatal fitness, and to listen to your body and not push yourself too hard.
Buggyfit can be a safe and effective way for new mothers to get back in shape after having a baby, whilst making new friends and spending time outdoors with your little one. A win all round here at Mumie!
